Supplementary Materials for Panel Discussion: Internet and Chemistry

Masato M. Ito

Chairman of the Panel Discussion: Internet and Chemistry
Faculty of Engineering, Soka University, Hachioji, Tokyo 192-8577, Japan

This panel discussion session was held in the afternoon of November 22nd 1999. In the first part, the following four panelists gave talks on specific subjects, each concerning the active use of the Internet in chemical education:

Abstracts of the contributions are available on the web at the page for the Panel Discussion Session: http://www.t.soka.ac.jp/chem/ACEN/8accpanel/abstr. It is a pity that only two of the panelists contributed to this issue. However, Prof. Chiu disseminated all of the material that was presented in his talk via a page in his web site, and Prof. Fogliani sent brief supplementary material to the session web page.

After a ten minutes intermission, the second part (discussion) started. Unfortunately, the chairman was not able to record the session, thus no reproduction was possible. However, the active discussion must have been impressive and beneficial to all of those attending the session.

Among the numerous aspects treated in the session was a suggestion made by Prof. C. Y. Mou, concerning the possibility of free distribution of journals on the web, and the comment on it by Dr. Paul H. L. Walter, 1998 President of the American Chemical Society. Afterwards, Dr. Walter kindly gave his comment to the chairman, and it is now disseminated in the on-line discussion page for this session.

Although the 8ACC session is over, you can continue the discussion on the web via http://www.t.soka.ac.jp/chem/ACEN/8accpanel/online.html. Everyone is welcome to send a comment to the chairman, either on the subject of the session, or on a particular point mentioned in the session or the above home page.

The chairman hopes that the session itself as well as the on-line discussion afterwards will contribute to the development in chemical education in the whole of the Asian-Pacific region.
