Chemical Education in the 9ACC and the WCC

The Ninth Asian Chemical Congress (9ACC) was held in July 1-3, 2001 in Brisbane Australia, as part of the World Chemical Congress 2001 (WCC), in which was also incorporated the 38th Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the Asian Federation of Medicinal Chemistry Congress 2001 (AIMECS 01) [1]. There was one symposium focused on Chemical Education, the 9ACC symposium "Chemistry and Community", organized by Dr. Bob Bucat (Australia), Professor C. L. Fogliani (Australia), Professor Ma. Cristina D. Padolina (Philippines), and Dr. Masato M. Ito (Japan). It consisted of one invited lecture, eleven oral and four poster presentations. In addition, there were at least nine oral and several poster presentations focused on Chemical Education in the WCC, including the symposium "Chemistry by Computer" [2]. The titles and speakers for the presentations are listed below.

In addition, a satellite workshop on chemical education [3] was organized by the IUPAC Committee on Teaching of Chemistry (CTC), the presentation of which, we expect, will be published by IUPAC CTC or its successor Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE) [4].

As an editor of the Chemical Education Journal (CEJ), as one of the organizer s of the Symposium of 9ACC, and also as an ex-Director of the FACS Project "Asian Chemical Education Network (ACEN) [5], I am very pleased to see that this special issue is being published herewith, with eight contributions, four from each symposium. Some of the other 9ACC presentations seem more related to 'community' than 'education' and WCC key note lectures will be presented elsewhere, such as in "Pure and Applied Chemistry" (issued by IUPAC) [6].
Papers for the remainder of the presentations will be cordially considered for publication in the future issues of CEJ, as well as other contributions in relation to chemical education. We will be happy if this issue contributes to the enhancement of information exchange in the Asia-Pacific region and development of chemical education in the region.
